Key properties of cut granite slabs
- Rock type — deep igneous granite (quartz + feldspar + mica/biotite)
- Colors — most commonly grey Strzegom (light grey with black/white speckles)
- Surface finish (most popular combinations with cutting):
- cut-flamed (cut + flamed) → rough, anti-slip (most often for terraces/driveways)
- cut-brushed → matte, slightly textured
- cut-bush-hammered → slightly dotted texture
- cut-polished → smooth, glossy (mainly interiors or covered terraces)
- cut-split sides → naturally broken side edges
- Thickness — 2 cm (lighter facades, terraces on slabs), 3 cm (standard terrace/driveway), 4–5 cm (heavy traffic, exterior stairs)
- Hardness and abrasion resistance — extremely high (LA ≈ 20–35, abrasion <0.5–1 mm)
- Frost resistance — full (F1–F2), does not crack even with salt and -30°C
- Water absorption — very low (<0.5–1%) → stain-resistant, does not absorb water, does not get dirty easily
- Weather resistance — highest: UV, acid rain, salt, frost, heat, no fading or biological growth
- Aesthetics — modern, raw, elegant; grey color universal, red adds warmth
- Natural, without dyes, ecological
Summary – cut granite slabs (especially grey Strzegom cut-flamed 3 cm) are currently the most durable and maintenance-free material for terraces, driveways, stairs and facades. They withstand vehicle traffic, salt and pressure washers and do not require impregnation. The absolute basis for granite slabs or paving stones to last for years in your space is proper preparation of the base before installation.
